Just back to ATW central after a little break and I see that the sky is about to fall in all our all heads!!! Or at least that is what we would conclude if we swallowed the guff trotted out by the Government appointed Sir Roger Stern, the latest recruit to the "We're all doomed" global warming hysteria gang.
According to Sir Roger, global warming could shrink the global economy by 20%. But taking action now would cost just 1% of global gross domestic product, the 700-page study says. Tony Blair, responding to what his Puppet says informs us that scientific evidence of global warming was "overwhelming" and its consequences "disastrous". According to David Milliband, the "debate" on global warming is OVER, and the only way forward is...to RAISE taxes! LOL - what a nonsense this all is. I enjoyed Melanie Phillips in the Mail today exposing Stern's fraud...
As the distinguished American meteorologist Professor Richard Lindzen observed last weekend, the computer modelling performed at the Hadley Centre, one of Britain’s most vociferous proponents of man-made climate change, was seriously at odds with the actual warming that was taking place.
The facts are that the rise in temperature over the past century, 0.6C (plus or minus 0.2C), is unexceptional; and that clouds and water vapour are far more significant presences in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.
Yet this is an issue where ideology is simply driving out evidence. Sir Nicholas will apparently highlight the threat of catastrophic rises in sea level. But according to the IPCC, the seas are not rising. Although they were higher in the last century than in the previous one, it says in its Third Scientific Report: ‘No significant acceleration in the rate of sea-level rise during the 20th century has been detected.’
Attributing global warming to anthropogenic activity is just another scam for lefties to CRANK up your taxes, to try and limit where you can travel, and to punish you for driving a car bigger than a kettle on wheels. Contrary to Blair, Milliband and Stern, the DEBATE is just starting, and the apostles for global apocalypse need to find some science to back up their wild claims.
Richard Carey
I actually agree with Melanie Phillips on a number of issues, especially her analysis of the problem of islam in western societies.
But I think she would accept herself that she is well to the right of the political spectrum in the UK.

Peter,
I doubt that she would. I'm sure she sees herself as a true Liberal, as her essay on "the corruption of liberalism" indicates.
As for political spectrum, the three main parties provide nothing wide enough to be called a spectrum.

The Troll trolled:
"NEITHER are caused by man ..."
Yes, I suppose woman is to blame again eh?
Does anybody who's trying to deny that global warning isn't a fact EVER think of the future? I mean really think about it? In fifty years' time will your grandchildren be asking:
"Mum, what did Grandpa and Nan do about global warning?"
"Er, fuck all, my dear. That's why the world's the way it is. And why are you wearing your sister's ventilator? What happened to your own?"
My grandchildren on the other hand will be remembering the good fight Fanny fought, in her own little way.
[Fanny searches for the smugness smiley.]

According to Nasa, the world climate has warmed by 0.6 degrees celsius in the last 30 years.
"The study by researchers from Nasa, Columbia University and the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), showed that warming was greatest at high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, and was more pronounced over land than the oceans.
The reason behind the rise in temperatures in this region was a result of a loss in snow and ice cover, the researchers said.
As the Earth warmed, melting snow and ice exposed dark land surfaces which absorbed more energy from the Sun, resulting in more warming - a process known as "positive feedback".
But hey, there's NOTHING to worry about, right? Obviously Nasa has joined the conspiracy. LOL!

The number one cause of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere are volcainoes the number 2 is saltwater evaporation NEITHER are caused by man and NEITHER can be cured by raising taxes
yes and those are natural emmissions. its the unnatural emmisions that are tipping the balance. try adding too much water to a pot plant and see what happens.

daytripper: "yes and those are natural emmissions. its the unnatural emmisions that are tipping the balance. try adding too much water to a pot plant and see what happens"
Hahahaha! That's rich... are you actually claiming that not only are the emissions quantifiable, but the "tipping point" is quantifiable? You must be kidding.
You will say anything.

I must ask Peter;
1. How old are you?
2. Do you really believe that what you have written will ever be implemented by politicians?

mahons,
I think the topic has such political baggage that each side ignores the actual discussion and offers competing articles as scripture
No, there is an asymmetry which is much like the one we find in discussions about evolution and for that matter mortality in Iraq. Indeed many of the people who deny there is a man-made contribution to GW are the same people who are sure they didn't come from no monkey, and that only one person has died in Iraq (of old age).
It is all the denial of the basic facts that distracts from discussion of what to do about it. Such denial is not from both sides, it is one way traffic. Having said that I think it is pretty clear that we are in for climactic mayhem one way or another, but I think it's a lot less clear that reducing emissions would help or even which policies would best result in reduced emissions etc.

Frank,
"It is all the denial of the basic facts that distracts from discussion of what to do about it. Such denial is not from both sides, it is one way traffic"
I hope you realise the "other side" says the same thing!

Richard, of course. But I don't think any reasonable person could read the various arguments with an open mind and fail to notice that one "side" has the facts in their corner and the other one has Michael Crichton.

Yep, they say that as well!

Frank, great link posted at 11.23. Of course, the deniers won't read it.
I posted a similar link to a Royal Society paper last week. Might as well have written a letter to santa. These guys minds are made up FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.

If global warming does turn out to be true, I await DV's apology to all with interest.

Should (man-made) 'global warming denial' be a criminal offence?

What's absolutely hilarious about right-wing conservatives is how they line out shoulder to shoulder no matter what the issue, and the sheer ridiculous hypocrisy of the points they argue.
Take for instance that Mark Steyn article of a few days ago that provided the focus for another thread, about how we are all expected to get worried about Steyn's predictions for future levels of Muslim populations worldwide and how ill this bodes for all of us by the late 21st century, i.e. we should all be preparing to fight hand-to hand for our very survival against a global jihad by fundamentalist Islamofacists (or something).Funnily enough, here the right-wingers are projecting a disaster scenario 40-50 years hence and telling us if we don't start doing something about it RIGHT NOW, we will all soon perish in the most horrible fashion.
So according to Steyn and his ilk, i.e. the likes of Vance & McCann, THIS is the global emergency that we should all be concerned about, even though the most basic grasp of statistical analysis and scientific theory will tell you that this is utter horseshit. And as for trying to reverse the effects of global warming, that can be put on the long finger for another few decades, or better yet, forgotten about altohgether, because that's not really a problem, it's only a left-wing conspiracy in order to win support for raising taxes.
What total, utter and complete nonsensical rubbish.
