Earlier this year 18-year-old Nazanin was sentenced to death in Iran after she stabbed one of three men who attempted to rape her. In June, she was granted a stay of execution and a retrial. The retrial is planned for this month sometime - her family (and the families of many other victims) were in Tehran today to press her case with the UN. It appears she may yet be executed. I've been following the case of Nazanin (and others) throughout the year as information has become available on the net. I can't pretend to imagine what Nazanin is going through or feeling - or how this protracted process, which has seen her locked in solitary confinement and suffer two heart attacks, is affecting her family. But I do recognise that she is worthy of support and totally lacking it from her 'sisters' in the west.
Frankly i'm embarrassed by 'feminism'. Yes, there are still issues here for which we have yet to await a satisfactory outcome and which are dismissed very very flippantly. Nevertheless it is the most basic of human rights which are denied many women under shari'a law and Islam which the likes of lefty Madeleine Bunting astonishingly ignores - choosing to observe during Popegate that it is instead only the catholic church failing to deal with the "challenge of modernity". Yeah. Nazanin would, im sure, agree. You can read about Nazanin and sign the petition on line here.
Jeez, Colm, you're right! Thanks.
Terrible thing to get yer women mixed up like that.
Err, Alison.. my 10:30 is for you!

Is '10.30' a euphemism :)

LOL Colm!
I don't get out of bed for anything less than a 12:45 ;o)

LOL!!
Colm, it should of course really have been 10:38, but I didn't want to make you feel inadequate!
Remember Alison said she preferred her liberals well hung!

Aileen, you'll have to wait a bit for 12:45!
But who's talking about getting OUT of bed?
I should also like to point out that I'm a wet liberal everywhere except in bed.

ive no idea what is going on in this thread. neither am i interested in it being hijacked for some perceived higher moral slapping from Cunningham. I just hope you guys signed the petition. If the thread develops into something like a discussion on the womens rights abuses in Iran then that would be something and id be happier to add to it.

alison
I have signed the petition and I believe aileen has too. I don't know about cunningham Do you think it will make a difference ?
Posted by: Colm | September 27, 2006 at 12:21 PM
cheeeeers Colm. actually i think it did have an impact on the stay. Its being spearheaded by her namesake the Canadian Miss World Nazanin whos been rattling cages at the UN. Dont you think it weird that a Miss World is so involved - an example of everything the womens movement HATED. Mind you ironically so do the islamists. I can see why they so quickly became bedfellows. Tom is quite right.

Yes Colm
as I posted at 9:55 Sept 4th.
Getting her life spared is only part of the issue. What will happen to her afterwards also worries me. I say this at the risk of setting Mr Smith of on one again.

She will need to be removed from her home area and probably live in hiding or leave the country , but sadly the medieval minded thugs who attacked her in the first place would probably enact an 'honour' revenge againct another innocent female in her family.

Nazanins family will have to pay them 'blood' money. All legal and above board in Iran. I think that might be what happens if she is not executed.
Posted by: alison | September 27, 2006 at 12:54 PM
The international community needs to do something about this before those bastards kill her! We know what prison she's being held at, just send in a highly trained strike team to storm the prison and rescue Nazanin and all the other innocent people being held captive. A bunch of stupid barbarians with ak47s and home-made explosives is no match for a team of highly-trained specialists with cutting-edge guns and gear
