No answer, then.

David Vance

Willowfield,

Permit me to explain something to you. Writing ATW takes up a lot of my time, and I have apologised for the fact that I do not see every comment every reader makes. I certainly do not have time to respond to every comment. You must learn to accept this and not petulantly repeat questions on the basis that this ensures that I will find the time to answer you.

Now then, I'm not sure how you conclude that I use Council services - perhaps you might share that insight with me? And can you tell me what the value of such services might be? And do you know that these could not be privately provided, more economically? And maybe, if you've still got some spare time, you might then go and look up WHY Government has a right to take any of my assets, be they capital wealth or income? You are a Statist through and through and have not yet figured that those who earn wealth should be allowed to keep what they earn so they can spend it as they see fit - not as Tony Blair, my local Council or any other politician decides. Now, you've had enough of my time, I have other priorities.

Surprise, surprise, you haven't answered my questions.

I asked you what your objection was to taxing capital wealth RATHER THAN your income. I know you don't like any kind of tax, but you drew particular attention to the fact that this is a capital tax, so why can't you explain why a capital tax is worse than an income tax?

You claim you don't use "council utilities", but presumably you get your bins collected? Presumably you use public roads and footpaths that are cleaned by the council? Maybe you occasionally enjoy a stroll in your local park? Perhaps you dine out occasionally in a restaurant inspected by environmental health officers? Presumably your house was built in accordance with building control standards? And, of course, you know that your rates also go to pay for other public services not provided by the council. Presumably your children attend schools? You might have used a hospital in the past? And you might even use public roads?

As for whether such services might be provided more economically, I don't know. It's unlikely that any reduced costs would be other than marginal. But that's not what I was asking you about. I was asking why you think a capital tax is more objectionable than an income tax.

And maybe, if you've still got some spare time, you might then go and look up WHY Government has a right to take any of my assets, be they capital wealth or income?

Er, because the elected representatives of the people have given the Government the right to tax you! It's called parliamentary democracy. I thought you supported it.

You are a Statist through and through and have not yet figured that those who earn wealth should be allowed to keep what they earn so they can spend it as they see fit - not as Tony Blair, my local Council or any other politician decides.

That's your view, but it's up to Parliament to decide how much to tax and how much to spend.

Well?
