It is reported that the DUP will decide whether to meet the UDA, Northern Ireland’s largest paramilitary group, in an effort to persuade it to stand down and decommission weapons. I hope it decides against this as it has no business having ANY dialogue with these thugs. Last week Peter Robinson, the DUP deputy leader, met Rev Mervyn Gibson, the chairman of the Loyalist Commission, to discuss the issue in detail. The commission, which includes representatives of loyalist paramilitaries, clergymen and community leaders, aims to bring an end to loyalist violence.
I oppose the Loyalist Commission and I oppose any talks with terrorists. The DUP may think it can gain brownie PR points presenting itself as a "persuader" for "peace" but the UDA has no right to exist, it is a moral obscenity and talking with the vermin that run it will only degrade the DUP.
