Interesting timing. On Valentine's Day comes "the news" that "doctors" believe that gay marriage "could" boost the mental and physical health of homosexuals.
Based on their own research, it would need too. Apparently rates of depression, drug abuse and cancer are higher in the gay community than among heterosexual people. In addition, this same research has shown that lesbians have higher risk of breast cancer, heart disease and obesity, while gay men have a higher risk of HIV.
Now, I do not wish illness or indeed unhappiness upon anyone (Except terrorists) but don't you think that this sort of report is odd? On the one hand it points out that homosexuals suffer poor health but on the other it claims that their "marriage" somehow puts this right?
Now, I know that marriage is a good thing but, but this is the big "but", marriage is an institution between one man and one woman. Even Elton John can't change that. Cupid's arrow may fly in any direction, I will accept. but I'm really not sure what the point of this report is other than pure propaganda? That's why Stonewall has been quick to embrace it.
I think there probably is a propagandising thing happening here...
But I don't see it's strange at all that two men in a long term relationship should have better health, mental and physical, than single men.
This, of course, was true *before* civil partnerships came into law at the end of 2005.
If I had a Special Friend, I can't see he would be any more Special because our relationship enjoyed the imprimatur of some spiritually-crippled minor bureaucrat down the town hall.

DST
Why does the Bureaucrat have to be necessarily "spiritually crippled" ?
Posted by: Colm | February 14, 2006 at 12:30 PM
DST,
And I think your point is perfectly reasonable.

It's a quota system.

Colm is right. That was a tautology. "Spiritually crippled" is implied by bureaucrat.
PS - Colm ... are we to meet in Real Life this Friday. Not in South Belfast hotel, I hasten to add... but under the strict gaze of Aileen?

DST
I believe Aileen is trying to arrange something. haven't checked my e mails for a couple of days. I will check and see if the meeting of the London ATW gang is happening.

Colm - good stuff. Should be good. And an interesting way to extend the ATW brand franchise into new territories.

It's like the ATW variant on "Friends Reunited"....maybe "Fiends Reunited"??? Hope you all have a great evening and raise a glass to the ATW alma mater!

Thanks David
In the spirit of ATW, we can look forward to being escourted off the premises by the local constabulary. In the interests of health, safety and Respect, of course!

there won't be a reputation in tact by the end of the evening ;o)
Posted by: Aileen | February 14, 2006 at 07:07 PM
Aileen,
I'm counting on you to keep ATW's proud reputation intact, now you all must behav, and if you don't, I want details!
Posted by: David Vance | February 14, 2006 at 07:46 PM
David
When I said that there won't be a reputation intact by the end of the evening I didn't mean the London ATW, I meant everyone else. Gossiping to Olympic standard! ;o)
We'll all behave! we may just behave badly ;o)

David
The London ATW meeting went very well and once the pub's insureres have done their assessment a wee whip round should cover it!
It was good craic!
I mutual friend of DST and mine was there ans he said that he has printed off a few threads as they make better reading that a newspaper in the loo! (and yes I know that there is another obvious scatalogical use that can be made of paper.')
I doubt if we'll see him on here as he's even more thechnophobic than me and kept calling it a "blob"!

ASBOs all round... I heard the landlord say something about "worse than Gomorrah... worse than LARNE!"
Posted by: DST | February 18, 2006 at 10:53 AM
Did you all wear your "Save Sodomy From Ulster" T-shirts ?
Posted by: Madradin Ruad | February 18, 2006 at 11:21 AM
David had his "Save Sodomy FOR Ulster" leather waistcoat on!
Posted by: Aileen | February 18, 2006 at 11:25 AM
David as in DST BTW!
Posted by: Aileen | February 18, 2006 at 11:26 AM
Aileen,
Great to hear you had a good night! DST's choice in waistcoasts sounds...a laugh!
Posted by: David Vance | February 18, 2006 at 11:57 AM
Morning all.
Well I was there and can confirm that all of the above is true . There were 4 of us and I was the only one who behaved respectfully. I sat quietly sipping Orange juice while The Ulster 3 behaved in a fashion that would make Mad faint again and again, especially the part where Aileen leapt onto the bar and pole danced with her Cardi off !!
A pleasant evening all round.

When is the home meeting in Ulster? and when are we al going to decend on Monica and the Troll, [appoaching the house very carefully with our hands up and Colm in front ;0) ]

"the part where Aileen leapt onto the bar and pole danced with her Cardi off !!"
It was a bit of a low moment when that guy picked up my cardi and held it out to me and the crowd started chanting "ON! ON!" :o(

That's Londoners for you - they have no taste!
