I know that you are worried about pollution in Herzegovina, you paid £286,479.60 to know about it. I also know that you are concerned about wolves in Croatia, because you also contributed £446,029.28 for that privilege! You also contributed £1,069,380.71 to study how humans impact on nature; £2,752,788.51 to study water catchment areas, £13,418,248.22 to, as far as I can tell, stop ships from colliding with one another; and finally, a massive £738,003,651.934 to aid a new G.P.S. satellite system to be placed in orbit. Not that that previous figure is the total cost, that’s just for the ‘design to platform’ stage of the project!
All of the above projects, and thousands more like them have been funded by European Union funds, which, in the end, means partly funded from the V.A.T. clawed from British pockets, purses and wallets by both Labour and (I am ashamed to have to admit it) Conservative Governments to fund the European Gravy Train!
Now the problems of Herzegovina’s plumbing and sewage may be huge, and the wolves are really friendly; we all know in our hearts that we impact on the natural things around us; we really need the water, it’s not really the ‘best thing’ to have ships bashing into one another; and it’s nice to be able to discover easily where we are going, or in fact where we are! This last despite the fact there is a perfectly good system both free, and up there already!
Tony Benn, a politician who I cordially dislike and revere at the same time, encapsulated it as follows:- “Where did he get his power from, to whom is he accountable and how can we get rid of him?” In Britain, we operate ‘democracy’ by means of ‘first past the post’, or ‘majority rule’. But before the elections take place, at least the various parties state categorically in ‘manifesto’ form, the foundation items by which they plan to rule these Isles for the next four-five years; how they plan to take our money, and of course where they plan to spend it! So at least we know; or at least are warned, what is going to happen to our collective cash!
But no-one elects the people who spend OUR money in Europe! The Commission is appointed, the Parliament is toothless, the Bureaucracy rules without accountability! No one can be called to accept responsibility!
My point is simple, it would have been really nice to have been asked if we wanted these things!!!
