I wonder if this means a Fianna Fail- SDLP merger? It would be great for the north. At last a sensible party that people could vote for.

Whenever i would here Hume on the radio, he was giving his single transferable speech. How if Germany and France could mend their differences after going to war, then why not Northern Ireland and the Republic?
There is no comparison, France or Germany have never wished to see each others state dissolved. Where as republicans want to wipe Northern Ireland off the map!
He turned what little democratic socialism there was in the party, into an Irish nationalist party, thereby killing any hope of any Protestants supporting or joining it in considerable numbers. I wonder if even 10 of the 2196 are Prods?
The tradgedy of Ulster politics is that people who could have contributed a great deal to the community ,because of the circumstances and politics have been unable too! Look at someone like Brian Mawhinney, he left for the mainland and ended up in the cabinet, nobodies telling me hes brighter than say Dodds, Burnside or McCartney!

David Vance

Sad indeed. As I know.

Ogra

'There is no comparison, France or Germany have never wished to see each others state dissolved.' yes they have!!!!, napolean, Bismarck both world wars.

'he left for the mainland' i'm not aware of him being in the Dail.
Its a pity to see the SDLP and UUP gone, ut times have changed, we must deal with what we have

Somewhat of a Robert Peel feel about Hulme. Attwood and McDonnell are more Disraeli though, more a "Damn your country support your party" type of Stoop.

Good news though! ;)

Alan McDonald

David,

The answer to your quiz is, obviously, a United Ireland.

What did I win?

scouseproud

Ogra, there is a difference between dissolved and taken over. France like Norway still exisited after they had been defeated, the Nazis just put their own collaborators in control like Petain and Quizling. These two Countries still appeared even on Nazi maps. Northern Ireland wouldnt be appearing on any map if republicans got their way!
Mawhinney s mainland is mainland Britain, a fact always recognised by every sovereign state in the world bar one,(Irish Republic) who now at last "claim" to recognise Northern Ireland?

Ogra

'Mawhinney s mainland is mainland Britain, a fact always recognised by every sovereign state in the world bar one', ya i know, i was only jokin,as far as i know the republic does recognise the north as British.

'Ogra, there is a difference between dissolved and taken over'

not really, the only difference is the name. Wheter Ireland was called Ireland or west britain before independance, wouldnt have matered, it ws still under british control. nothern ireland, like western ireland would still exist.

The mainland for these islands is Europe.

What does it profit a man if he gains a United Ireland and loses or forfeits his own political party?

Why would anyone consider the SDLP more important than a United Ireland. That goes for Sinn Fein too.

If unionists want a deal for a united Ireland that excludes Sinn Fein from power Irish nationalists would be happy to agree.

Parties come and go but the national imperative remains.

Parties come and go but the national imperative remains.

Only for nationalists Henry.

Even some Fenians come to their senses though - As far back as 1878 one Presbyterian Radical, James Bryce Killen, wrote that he wanted to see the creation of a United States of Europe, called 'the European Union'.

Henry94

MR

That was 30 years after The Communist Manifesto which wanted to see a united world run by and for the workers.

Dreams can turn into nightmares.

Madradin Ruad

Dreams can turn into nightmares.

I agree - History shows that's the risk of nationalism.

Henry94

It has also proved the risk of internationalism in both its imperial and Marxist manifestations.

If people vote to live under a European consititution that is democratic but when they vote to reject it and it is implemented anyway then we are on the road to tyranny.

Th uber-nationalism of the eurodreamers may lead us to disater.

Christmas is probably the most special day of the year for children. One thing that makes it special is the popular tradition of Santa Claus.
