Many of you will know that Aileen Quinton is a regular contributor to ATW. We do not always agree politically (who does?), but she is a contributor whose presence is deeply welcomed and appreciated by both David and I. I will also say it is my opinion that she is a far more rounded human being than I could ever be, having the courage to carry on when perhaps the closest person in her life is taken by the calculating murderous brutality of a terrorist. If my mother was killed in the same circumstances, I honestly do not know how I would carry on. Aileen held her dignity during a candlelit protest outside Sinn Fein's Dublin politburo in 1997, whereas I would have been demolishing the place with a JCB and a wrecking ball. That's why she is a better human being than me.
So my heartfelt best wishes go to Aileen as she prepares to lobby MPs this week to reject the proposed amnesty for so-called On the Run terrorists. The 'man' named as the perpetrator of the Enniskillen massacre is one Charles Caufield. He has been identified as one of the scumbags who will likely benefit from this abject surrender of principle and decency disguised as 'peace process choreography'. According to the article, Aileen will join Jeffrey Donaldson and a host of other victims outside the Houses of Parliament in London this coming week. There has already been a minor victory in the possible delay of implementing the legislation for up to one year. I hope a far greater success can be won on the matter. No terrorist should be safe from the law, and the killers why styled themselves as defenders of a community who, by their electoral choices and radicalised opinions are almost in the same realm of unblemished wickedness, should be no different.
Well spoken Andrew.

I didn't know thats who Aileen is.
If there is anything any of us can do to help, Aileen, let us know. If there is some protest or vigil - publicise it here on ATW.
Eniskillen 1987 is permanently on my mind. I support your position on this 100%.

Best of luck to Aileen in her efforts.
I thought that this OTR deal meant that, at best, if these people come back, a verdict will be reached but that then they'll be released anyway.
Is this not the best case scenario at this stage or is this demonstration hoping to stop them coming back altogether?

They can come back and face punishment.

Good luck Aileen.

Aileen,
You have my best wishes as well, as do all your colleagues in this attempt to stop the malignant immoral depravity of Blair and co. It is our pleasure to have you as a contributor on ATW - even IF you do work in the public sector :-)
(That's to keep you grounded...!)

Good luck Aileen, our prayers our with you and all the family members of those that have suffered at the hands of terror. It is beyond my understanding how government officials can make deals to allow murderers to go free.

Well done Aileen.

I am really touched by everyone’s support thank you.
I got such a gunk when I logged in just to see what the craic was on ATW. I didn’t know about the article. For me this issue goes way beyond victims issues but about establishing the parameters of a decent society.
Andrew thank you for your kind words. Re the vigil. The JCB I hired didn’t turn up so I had to improvise ;o).
Actually the idea was given to me when I asked someone, who shall be nameless, what was the most effective thing that I could do against the IRA considering that the 10th anniversary was coming up. He said, without hesitation "a vigil on your own outside SF HQ in Dublin" My immediate thought was - What is the SECOND most effective thing…… However what came out of my mouth was something along the lines of "OK how do I go about that" I had a poster saying "Remembering the Past for the sake of the Future". My eldest brother told me I looked like Maud Gonn (not sure of the spelling) in my black hat and coat.
Joc thanks
Howard thanks I will let you all know where and when anything is happening.
Garfield thanks We don’t know the details of the legislation but we have to be ready for anything.
Paul Cheers!
David - you could have thrown something worse at me (or maybe not considering your views). Seriously though, I first started posting here [under my real name anyway ;o)] when I googled my name and found a year old thread supporting something else I had been up to. ATW has been a haven in a sea of appeasement elsewhere. As for being grounded - too late my head has been turned - you right wing reactionary old fart ;0) (and do excuse the tautology)
Troll Thank you for your prayers. Good to think of your support from the USA. As a matter of fact the Poppy Day Massacre bereaved American citizens as two of my mother’s three siblings (she had 10) who emigrated in their teens were still living at the time.
Thanks Mad

I'm late of course. Just would like to add my sentiments to the others. God bless you. I look up to you for being so strong.

I would also like to add my best wishes to you Aileen. I am lucky that I have never had to face the killing of a close loved one by a terrorist, and can only think that , much as people say time is a healer and all that, I honestly think I would be destroyed by bitterness if I had to also face the realisation that the killers were recieving a wholly unjustified early freedom.
Aileen, you are a great example of someone who has rightfully NOT forgiven your mother's killers but has managed in a dignified and constructive manner to honour her memory by continuing to fight for a justice that has not been achieved.

Can I just add my Good Luck to you Aileen as well. D

Just maybe the string of concessions to republicans will be stopped here? Good luck anyway!

All the best in London, Aileen. I hope you guys make some headway against this ridiculous proposal!
On a lighter note, I wonder if you could get Jeffrey Donaldson to pose next to a computer screen with ATW on it - that'd make for a good headline! Better yet, a Levee Breaks one!
Posted by: levee | November 07, 2005 at 11:31 PM
That last sentence is capable of more than one interpretation ;)

Three phrases should be among the most common in our daily usage. They are: Thank you, I am grateful and I appreciate.

Well done Aileen, may God give me a scrap of your courage. IRA fascists burn in hell.
