The Newsletter has flagged up an issue that Andrew and I have been discussing recently, namely that the IRA is poised to release a statement which the Governments are going to then use to beat Unionists over the head and try and force them to enter Government with the Brownshirts.
This statement will be presented as the IRA's considered response to Gerry Adams's pre-election request that it ceases "the armed struggle". This ignores the fact that Adams was in fact asking HIMSELF a question, and that this is all part of a major Sinn Fein/IRA PR offensive aimed at putting the DUP under maximum pressure whilst keeping the Rafia happy.
The Newsletter cuts to the chase when it suggests that;
"A statement on the IRA's future and decommissioning will follow but the source suggested this would be aimed at meeting the requirements of the British, Irish and US governments."
The significance here is that it will fall way short of Unionist expectations. Provo words are not enough. They might get the BBC excited but they mean nothing to unionists. Sham acts of "putting weapons beyond use" are also not enough. The IRA must disarm, disband, cease ALL it's mafia activities, do so transparently and verifiably, and sink into well deserved oblivion BEFORE any Unionist would review where Sinn Fein/IRA stand . Up for that Gerry?
D'oh - I didn't think so.
