What's the problem. We live in a monarchy. The people don't choose the head of state or their sposes. That is the whole point of having a monarchy over an elected president. Prince Charles is the eldest son of the current monarch . Whoever happens to be his wife ( be it Camilla , Jordan or Rose West!) at the time of his mother's death automatically becomes Queen . And we will all humbly bow in a demonstration of loyalty to our new Queen !

David Vance

Queen Jordan? Agggghhhh....

Colm

So no objection to Rose West then, David ;)

David Vance

I suppose Rose West would be a Killer Queen....

I don't think anyone's been lying. What happened, as far as I can make out, is that Charles and Camilla opted for the "Princess Consort" title, probably out of a mixture of respect for Diana and not wanting to piss the public off. Charles probably assumed that, being King, he'd be able to control a petty little thing like a title, but he's run slap-bang into the constitution: it turns out it's not his decision to make. The constitution ordains that she'll be Queen, and the King doesn't have the power to change the constitution.

No lies, just confusion.

The sensible thing to do would be to abolish the monarchy.

Colm

And have President Camilla instead.....

Michael

It would be funny having a Catholic being a Defender of the Faith wouldn't it. You could just hear the Big Doc screaming "papists!!!". lol

Michael Shilliday

I really don't care, he'll make a good king, she'll make at least an adequate queen........lets leave it there!

The thing about the British Constitution is that it's never being written down, so it's quite possible to have many different legal opinions on this. I don't think this has been tried before.

The only sensible option is to pass new legislation to be on the safe side. And anyway, even written constitutions run into controversy and confusion, see Roe vs. Wade in the U.S.

Michael

Michael - I don't think you are wrong. This position is largely ceremonial anyway so what does it really matter.

Colm

Does anyone think he's marrying the old bird because being next to her makes him look handsome :)

Young Irelander

The monarchy will be dead within this century.I'm sure of it.The British public won't like having this lady as their Queen.

Michael

Will it be her face or Charles' face on the stamps and money? Scary either way.

David Vance

YI,

The thing about the Monarchy is that it has outlived all those who said it would die. Oh dear - I fear that you - even as a young man - may nonetheles join that stream of wannabe republicans that time has swept away. I wish you a long life of course, but I reckon the British Crown will see you off.

Young Irelander

DV,

The monarchy has had a rich and full life alright (no pun intended) but one could be forgiven for thinking that Charlie is putting it in jeopardy.
I reckon the Queen will be the last of the "old-school" monarchs and that after her, the monarchy will require a major revamp.I'm not sure if Charles and Camilla can meet that requirement.William perhaps, but not Charles.

I'm sure that when Charles gets to the throne the whole thing will start to fall apart.

David Vance

YI,

I don't disagree with what you say - that's why I want to see King William on the throne. I'm sure that will resonate so well with our Irish neighbours. :-)

Young Irelander

DV,

It might.Except of course for John Bruton.Being such a big fan of Charles, he'd be devastated.:)
